Radical Gastrectomy

Radical gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the whole stomach. The procedure is indicated for the treatment of stomach cancer.

Radical gastrectomy is performed under general anaesthesia. You will be asked to lie down in a supine position (face up). Your surgeon makes an incision in the abdominal region to view and expose the stomach. The whole stomach is freed from the surrounding tissue, cut and carefully removed. The oesophagus is then connected to the small intestine. The incisions are closed firmly with sutures. As with all surgical procedures, radical gastrectomy may be associated with certain complications including bleeding, infection and leakage from the connected region.
